Lake Chala and Lake Jipe at a glance
Two lakes near the Tanzanian border are often mentioned together with Tsavo, and they are very different places. Lake Chala is a crater lake in Taveta Sub-County, right on the border between Kenya and Tanzania. Lake Jipe is a bird-watching lake in Tsavo West that Kenya shares with Tanzania.
Only Lake Jipe belongs to a national park. It has its own gate and a public campsite, so a visit falls under the usual Tsavo West park fee. Lake Chala is a separate excursion, and you should not assume that a Tsavo ticket covers it. If you are still choosing a trip, start with our Tsavo safari tours or the guide to Tsavo West.

Lake Chala: the crater lake
Lake Chala fills a crater and measures about 4.2 km² at the surface. It is up to 98 m deep. From the rim the water looks deep blue, with green crater walls around it and open plain beyond. Water levels change over time, so the shoreline can look different from older photos.
On the Kenyan side, the approach leaves the gravel road between Taveta and Emali. Parking is informal on the slope, and the last stretch is a steep walk down on foot. Conditions change, so ask locally for the current route before you go, together with any entry fee, parking charge or boat trip.
The lake lies on the border. Do not plan boat trips or walks that cross into Tanzania without checking the border formalities first. Prices you see for the Tanzanian side do not apply in Kenya. Treat Chala as its own trip, not as an add-on to a game drive.

Lake Jipe: birds, camping and a Tsavo West gate
Lake Jipe is a bird-watching destination in Tsavo West, and the lake is shared with Tanzania. It is both a way into the park and a camping location. The park has six gates: Mtito Andei, Chyulu, Tsavo River, Lake Jipe, Maktau and Ziwani. Lake Jipe is the one that suits a trip focused on the water and the birds.
The public campsite at Lake Jipe is one of three public campsites in Tsavo West, alongside Komboyo and Chyulu. Park entry, vehicle charges and camping are separate items, so a night at the lake does not replace the park fee. The where to stay page covers camping rates for each group of visitors.
Pay Tsavo park fees through the KWS eCitizen system. Do not count on paying by card or in cash at the gate. A park fee covers a single entry of up to 24 hours, so a longer stay needs a plan for the fee as well. More on rates is on the park fees page.
